Our Story
Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves, and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research, and education. In the Hawaiian Islands, Surfrider Chapters are located on the islands of O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, Maui, and Hawai‘i.
From beach cleanups to advocating at the County level, Surfrider Maui is constantly working to ensure a healthy future for Maui coastlines. Our current programs include Rise Above Plastics, protecting coastal areas, and monthly beach cleanups. We also host a number of events, including surf movie nights and concerts, throughout the year.
Surfrider Foundation Maui Chapter is comprised of a seven-member executive committee, as well as numerous volunteers. We are always looking for new volunteers and guarantee we have a spot for you!

Values & Mission
Surfrider Foundation Mission and Core Values
The Surfrider Foundation believes that getting outside and engaging with the natural world, especially the ocean, waves, and beaches, is inspiring, makes for healthier people, improves productivity, and ultimately creates a better culture.
1. Honor the mission.
The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves, and beaches through a powerful activist network. In every action we take, we consider our mission, our grassroots structure, and the local perspective. We focus on achieving tangible improvement to the health of our coasts and ocean.
2. The beach is fun and Surfrider should be too.
Surfrider is made up of people who love the ocean and it’s important that we get out there and enjoy it. Coastal and ocean conservation is serious business, but we make advocacy gratifying and fun.
We are optimistic about the future of our ocean and coasts because our volunteers are making a positive difference every day.
3. We are open and inclusive.
Our ocean, waves, and beaches belong to all of us and we welcome all who are interested in joining our movement. We seek to engage and represent the communities that we work in and encourage diversity at all levels of our organization.
4. We build leaders.
We believe that the most effective way to build a coastal protection movement is to create leaders in local communities. Surfrider cultivates a unique and innovative environment where our volunteers emerge as leaders in their communities.
5. We are problem solvers.
We are solution-oriented. Surfrider applies critical thinking, science and innovation to truthfully assess problems and develop practical long-term solutions that protect our coasts.
6. Make the culture yours.
Culture isn’t defined by a list, it is defined by behavior. The Surfrider culture is a responsibility shared by all. We embrace an organizational culture that encourages working together to achieve the best result. Leave your ego at the door and focus on the best outcome for Surfrider’s mission.
